EE Launching LTE Network In UK

EE is calling its new service 4GEE and it will launch commercially stating next Tuesday (October 30). 4GEE stands for the services offered by EE's LTE network, which will allow the usual calls and texts, with the addition of mobile data speeds of about 8-12Mbps.
The 4GEE service will be initially available in only 10 UK cities (London, Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield and Glasgow), but you would be able to buy it throughout the country nonetheless.
Six new cities will be added before Christmas (Southhampton, Belfast, Derby, Hull, Nottingham, Newcastle) with plans to cover 98% of the population by the end of 2014.
All LTE smartphone plans include unlimited calls and texts, user simply pick a data allowance of their choosing. The prices of the new plans start from £36/pm (offering up to 500MB traffic) and going north to up to £56/pm (which gets you up to 8GB of traffic). Free BT Wi-Fi access is included in the plans. So, yes, there are no unlimited plans just yet, but the offered plans are expensive enough as they are.

To make use of the 4GEE service, you would need an LTE-enabled handset purchased directly from Orange or T-Mobile or any of their partner retail stores. The only exception is the iPhone 5, which (if unlocked) would operate on 4GEE no matter where in the UK you got it from. And if you have recently bought an Apple iPhone 4S, a Samsung Galaxy SIII or an HTC One X, EE would upgrade it to an LTE version for £99.

EE is not only launching its 4G LTE service next week but it will also be rolling out its new corporate identity. Starting on October 30, all existing Everything Everywhere, Orange and T-Mobile stores will be re-branded as EE stores.

Existing customers will keep their plans and will continue to use the combined 3G network of T-Mobile and Orange without any change (though the network identifiers on their phones will start showing EE).
However, to become a new EE subscriber, you would need to pick one of the 4GEE plans. This is a quite odd move as not that many people have the phones to utilize the LTE network. In the same time there are no EE plans without LTE connectivity and LTE coverage is pretty limited for now.

Lumia 510 Goes Official

It's time for the Nokia Lumia 510 to get out of hiding and step into the light - it's an entry-level Windows Phone smartphone, which has some pretty decent specs. Starting with a 4" WVGA TFT screen, the Lumia 510 takes the lead on the Lumia 610, which has a 3.7" screen.
The Lumia 510 also features a 5MP autofocus camera with VGA video recording (matching the 610). Camera geeks might also want to know that the camera has an f/2.4 aperture and wide angle 28mm focal length (in 35mm equiv.).

The phone has only 256MB of RAM, which will probably limit app compatibility as we've seen with the Lumia 610. The internal storage is also limited - 4GB, non-expandable - which is another limitation to consider. Every Windows Phone comes with 7GB of free cloud storage on SkyDrive though this can be of little help when your internal storage fills up.
The Nokia Lumia 510 comes with Nokia's proprietary GPS-navigation apps Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive.
On the connectivity side, there's 2G and 3G with HSDPA, Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1.
There's no NFC on the Lumia 510, at least not on this model. The original 610 didn't have it at first too, but then Nokia launched the Orange-exclusive Lumia 610 NFC.
The Lumia 510 will run Windows Phone 7.5 at launch and will be updated to 7.8 as soon as it's ready.
Speaking of launch, the Nokia Lumia 510 will first go on sale in China and India in November, then move to the Asia-Pacific and South America. Nokia estimates the phone will cost $200 before taxes and subsidies.

QSlide On LG Optimus G

The QSlide feature on the LG Optimus G is a multitasker's best friend. Unlike the multiwindow function on the Samsung GALAXY Note II, which lets you cut the screen in half to use two apps at the same time, QSlide doesn't require the user to use the apps in a cramped space on the screen. With QSlide, two apps are using the device's 4.7 inch screen at once and one or the other app becomes translucent by sliding the QSlide controls. Controlling the level of translucency for each app, the user can watch a video while composing email, send a text while browsing the web, or do any type of multitasking while still using the full 4.7 inch display.
Video shows how LG developed its multitasking tool, QSlideIt's a brilliant idea and the story of how it was discovered makes you realize that inspiration can come anywhere, from anything or anybody. While LG's Senior Research Engineer Sebastian Hochan Song was driving in a car with his younger sister and nephew, the windows on the car fogged up. Watching his nephew draw on the fogged-up window from the rear-view mirror, it looked to Song as though his nephew was drawing on a transparent layer over the background of the outside. It was as though he was drawing on two layers and the engineer could see both of them at the same time. With this, QSlide was born.

While LG was able to make the second layer appear right away, controlling the level of translucency was difficult, according to Song. But the concept has been perfected and it is now one of the new features on the LG Optimus G.

Samsung Is Steady With Apple

Apple

Despite a report in the Korea Times on Monday quoting a Samsung Display executive as saying that Samsung would stop shipping displays to Apple next year, the Korean based tech giant has refuted the quote and says that the strange relationship between the two will continue. Obviously, Apple and Samsung feel at ease with each other regardless if it's in the courtroom or in the boardroom.

"Samsung Display has never tried to cut the supply for LCD panels to Apple."-Samsung spokesman
Samsung says it is not divorcing AppleThe report earlier Monday in the Korean paper said that because of discounts, Samsung was not earning enough money from sales of its displays to Apple which led to the decision by Samsung to stop shipping product to the Cupertino based firm. Samsung, denying the entire story, has requested that the Korea Times edit it. Both sides are at each other's throats in a series of court battles around the world. As a result, Apple has said that it wants to end its reliance on Samsung for certain critical parts that go into products that Apple competes against Samsung with, such as the processor and displays for the Apple iPhone 5 and the third generation Apple iPad.

Apple has been looking to source displays from LG and Sharp and recent water cooler talk has the company replacing Samsung with TSMC for chips.

Final Update Of Skype To Symbian Belle

If you are the proud owner of a Nokia 808 PureView a Nokia 701 or another Symbian Belle FP2 updated device, you may be happy to know that Skype is back in the Nokia Store.

One last update to Skype is now available for Symbian Belle devices
This is version 2.1.23, which was released some months ago, but it was apparently not fully tested. Now fully tested, the app is now available again. It is a voice and chat application only. No video calling is present within the app, though picture, video and other files may be exchanged.

One last update to Skype is now available for Symbian Belle devices
Outside of that, the app will support Skype-to-Skype calling via Wi-Fi or over a cellular data connection. Unfortunately, like Symbian, you will not have to hold your breath for further updates of this application, barring a critical business case to do so within a “maintenance” environment.
