A graph showing the growth of UK mobile phone subscriptions over time. |
The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), an agency within the United Nations, reports that there are roughly 6-billion cell phone subscriptions in the world.
Given that there are about 7-billion people in the world that is quite a statistic. The report does not immediately state how many of those subscribers are actually owners of multiple accounts, which is common in developed countries.
China accounts for 1-billion of the global subscriptions, and it is expected that India will surpass that mark this year. The ITU also reports that 2.3-billion people were internet users at the end of 2011. Of those, 70% live in wealthier industrialized nations.
